The Job Search
Résumé
Resume writing is one of the most important tools in your ‘job search’ tool bag. A resume is your own personal marketing document that outlines your past work experience, past education, past achievements, and current objectives. A great resume will set you apart from the crowd and display your talents.
While creating your resume is the only step in the job search in which you have total control, remember that the purpose of a resume is not to get a job, but to secure an interview. Since it serves as the first impression you make on a prospective employer, invest plenty of time and research in developing a powerful, error-free resume. Browse the tools and resources below to discover how to craft the perfect resume for you…

Interviewing
Interviews, theoretically, are a two way street; they are as much of an opportunity for candidates to sell themselves as they are for the organization with the vacancy to sell itself to the candidate. The job interview gives the potential employee and potential employer a chance to learn more about each other.
More importantly, however, a job interview gives you a chance to prove yourself, and gives you the opportunity to demonstrate that you possess the competencies required for a particular job. If you are invited to interview, chances are you’ve checked most of the boxes for the job. Your qualifications and achievements got you in the door, and now the employer will try and figure out whether you’re a good fit for the organization; in many cases, the interviewer is looking for an excuse to hire you.
Are you ready to interview? Once you have been selected for a job interview, it's important to prepare properly. That means rehearsing answers to interview questions, dressing appropriately, and, after the interview, sending thank you letters to your interviewers. If you are well prepared, confident, and do everything right, you'll make a winning impression.
Below, you'll find articles, sample questions, interactive practice tools, facts on illegal questions, fashion tips, and a plethora of other resources to help you succeed.

Correspondence
While most of us are familiar with the importance of a well-constructed resume, the accompanying cover letter and other types of correspondence used during the job search are equally important.
In an extremely competitive job market, failing to put the time and effort into your written products is a big mistake. Letters of Application, Letters of Inquiry, Thank you letters, Letters of Acceptance, and Letters of Refusal – all are vital in various stages of the search for employment. Before you put pen to paper, make sure you understand the proper business letter format, find out who to address your letter to, and carefully consider what you want to say and the impact of the letter – what you want to occur as a result of the correspondence and how will the reader react to it.
Typically, some form of written correspondence will be the first (and lasting) impression you make. It will be one of several opportunities to showcase and prove your qualifications, and should be a key component of a unified presentation to the employer. All written products should create and maintain interest in you as a candidate, focusing on your understanding of (and ability to meet) the employer’s needs. Below, you’ll find tools to help you craft the perfect written product. Good luck!

Networking
Today, many experts say that networking is one of the most important activities that job-seekers need to master to be truly successful in the search for employment. Many job openings are never advertised, so job-seekers need to have a network of contacts – a career network – that can provide assistance, support, information, and job leads. Job search networking may take you out of your comfort zone, but it really does work – some reports say more than 60% of all jobs are found by networking.
To make the most of your search for employment, participate in informal and formal Job Search Networking.. Develop a list of contacts from anyone who might help generate information and job leads (friends, family, neighbors, etc.); take a direct approach and ask for job leads or ask for information and advice. Make yourself attend a business social or an association meeting or event, and you'll probably find that many of the participants have similar goals and you’ll be able to network with career professionals and other job seekers.
As well as traditional networking, we encourage you to use the Internet to network. Consider visiting discussion boards, message boards, and websites that focus on job search and career networking. If you network via email, keep your message brief and to the point and be sure to check for proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Below are a variety of resources to help you network your way to that next career! Good luck!

Career Fairs
For employers, the methods for finding suitable employees are shifting in today’s world of recruiting. Career Fairs and Job Expos present opportunities for companies to meet and screen a large volume of potential job candidates. It’s convenient for hiring managers, as well as for eager job seekers. Job fairs provide an opportunity to connect with multiple employers; all in a single day and in one convenient location.
Attending a Career Fair should be likened to going to an initial job interview; ‘first impressions’ are very important. Prepare yourself thoroughly beforehand: research attending companies, plan out who you want to see, arrive early, and dress professionally.
Expect to wait, and to frequently stand in line. When you reach an employer’s table, be enthusiastic, smile and ask questions about their job opportunities. Potential employers like employees who show an interest and display a positive attitude.
While Job Expos and Career Fairs are important, keep in mind that they should be just one part of your entire job search process. There are competing theories about how to approach Career Fairs, and job seekers should be able to adapt their strategy to accommodate the situation. We hope the resources below help familiarize you with this aspect of the job search.

Wellness
Health and wellness for our Veterans, Service Members, and their Families remains a strategic imperative, from both national security and public health perspectives. The strength of the all-volunteer force (past and present) is undermined when the enduring health and well-being of many of its members is so precarious.
We hope that the links below will help the members of Missouri’s military community obtain the services, tools, and encouragement they need to take charge of their own health and well-being.
